Pendleton’s roundabout art

You do not need to be an artist to design or help create the art. Unlike most projects where volunteers are directed how to help create the vision of an artist who is getting paid. Let’s try a project where the artists are also volunteers and help create the vision of the group. You do not need to be an expert in metal to design and create a metal sculpture. Carmel’s finest roundabout art was created by an artist who works with glass. He has others fabricate the metal sculptures that he designs. Pendleton has enough artists, fabricators, and welders to fill the missing pieces of any team.

The process

  • Submit ideas of what you would like to see in the roundabout near 3 Rivers Bank. It could be anything from an artistic “Welcome to Pendleton” sign, to an abstract piece of art. It could be a single sculpture or made of many individual pieces of art. Keep in mind that one of our goals is to allow a group to create it.

  • We form groups to combine and/or develop those ideas. Recruit people to fill any voids in your group… graphic design, fabrication…

  • Each group will ultimately be submitting their proposal to the town. Our groups will not be the only ones trying to win the contract, and there will be only one winner, so you will need to decide if your concept is worth investing your time. But we will advise any group that wants to try.

  • Once the designs have been refined, we can help to determine the final cost. Then a formal proposal can be prepared and submitted.

  • Allow for as many people as you can to help build the art, and smile for the group photo once your build is complete.

Most of you will probably never have another opportunity to create a roundabout sculpture. Start by envisioning what you would create. Share your idea, see where it leads.
